Lodestar builds multimillion dollar custom homes in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. The best part about working with them? They didn’t want simple and modern to appeal to the masses. They wanted a logo that fully represented their old school character and penchant for the frontier days of yesteryears.

In the initial discovery phase, I learned that the co-founders wanted to include one thing for certain: a compass rose. I put this at the forefront of the icon and included the secondary directional points behind it to further enhance the shape of a star, which is in the company name. Next, I took a western font and toned down the elaborate serifs so the primary focus of the logo was the artwork.
Another touch is a topographic map not only to visually enhance the detail of the logo, but also to tie back to the compass rose. Together, they elicit discovery, adventure, direction, and navigation.
Behind the compass rose is a special nod to the co-founders home state of Pennsylvania, of which the state symbol is a keystone. An architectural element, the keystone is the center, wedge-shaped stone in an archway that holds all the other stones in place.
